About the Graduate College
The Graduate College serves all of the graduate students at the University of Iowa, approximately 25 percent of the student body. The Graduate College awards more than 30 percent of all degrees.
Because the Graduate College works in conjunction with the other colleges at the University, it has a unique role on campus. It has, for example, become the center for many international and interdisciplinary programs. The college also approves new academic programs and evaluates existing programs at the graduate level.
In addition to providing support and academic guidance for graduate programs campus wide, the Graduate College has direct oversight for several interdisciplinary academic programs and administrative units that support diversity (see list of academic oversight by the Graduate College). This level of involvement allows the Graduate College to be integrally connected with all aspects of graduate education in order to support and enhance interdisciplinary and diversity initiatives vital to this university.
Students work with faculty in an atmosphere of academic freedom and intellectual verve that stimulate creative and innovative thinking. Among 131 public research universities ranked in Hugh Davis Graham's and Nancy Diamond's book The Rise of the American Research Universities, The University of Iowa ranked among the top 20 based on the quantity and quality of research performance.
