Graduate College Outstanding Mentor Award

2008 Call for Nominations

The Graduate College Outstanding Mentor Award recognizes and rewards exemplary mentoring of doctoral students by members of the graduate faculty. Nominations are due Friday, April 11, 2008.

Criteria for Selection

Each year, the Graduate College gives two $2500 awards, alternating between two of four disciplinary areas (see list of eligible departments classified in these disciplinary areas). This year, the awards will go to faculty members in:

  • Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Engineering
  • Social Sciences

In order to qualify for the award, nominees must have:

  • been University of Iowa Graduate College faculty for a minimum of five full years.
  • mentored at least three students who have completed their doctoral degrees at the University of Iowa.

Nomination Process

Graduate students and faculty are invited to nominate a faculty mentor using the following general criteria:

  • Excellent research guidance
  • General assistance to graduate students
  • Positive impact on students individually, and as a group
  • Preparation for career decision-making and advancement

To nominate a faculty mentor for this award, please send by email attachment a maximum one-page letter briefly addressing the above criteria. The letter should include the faculty member’s department, campus address, campus phone, and email address.

Only one letter from one person is needed to initiate the nomination process.

Dean Berkowitz will contact nominees for names of colleagues, past students, and present students for letters of support. Nominees will also be asked to submit a current CV and a statement of their mentoring philosophy.

Nominations are due Friday, April 11, 2008.
