2006 NRC Assessment of Research Doctorate Programs     --    revised 02/06/07

Welcome to the University of Iowa Graduate College web site dedicated to the 2006 National Research Council (NRC) Assessment of Research Doctorate Programs.

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, the survey, “Research-Doctorate Programs in the United States,” undertaken by NRC is considered the gold standard for rating American graduate programs. This is the third NRC survey (previous assessments were conducted in 1983 and in 1995). NRC’s intent is to “design a study that will help universities improve the quality of doctorate programs, provide potential students and the public with accessible, readily available information on doctoral programs nationwide, and enhance the nation’s overall research capacity.” Work on this survey will continue into the spring semester with survey results reported in late 2007. Many but not all of our doctoral programs will be surveyed and compared to programs at peer institutions.

The first task was to assign our doctoral programs to fields within the NRC taxonomy. With input from our graduate programs and our NRC Task Force, those assignments have been completed and submitted to NRC’s subcontractor, Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. (MPR).

NRC has prepared questionnaires to be completed by the Institution; the participating doctoral programs; the faculty; and students in five fields (Chemical Engineering, Economics, English, Neuroscience, and Physics).

All questionnaires have undergone several FINAL versions, the most recent of which is dated 01/04/07They are all available for review in pdf and Word format on the NRC website.  The Institutional Questionnaire has been distributed to participating institutions in the interactive web format for online completion.

The previously reported final Program Questionnaire has been revised (again).  Please make sure you are looking at the version dated 01/04/07.  The interactive web-based Program Questionnaire has been received by the Graduate College for pre-population of designated questions.  All materials have now been sent to programs for final completion and submission to NRC by February 1, 2007.

The final versions of the Faculty and Student Questionnaires are dated 12/27/06 and 11/3/06 respectively.  The Graduate College has received IRB approval for our participation in the NRC Assessment. Faculty lists according to NRC's definition of core, new and associated faculty have been compiled with the help of programs and were sent to NRC on 12/5/06.  Post-comp student lists for the 5 participating doctorate programs (Chemical Engineering, Economics, English, Neuroscience, Physics) were submitted on 12/18/06.  NRC will email the web-based questionnaires directly to the faculty and students who will then complete the questionnaires entirely online and return them directly to NRC/Mathematica.

Below, you will find links that will take you to NRC’s web site as well as links that will lead you directly to information pertinent to The University of Iowa.  NRC's Frequently Asked Questions site has been expanded and revised into a more useful format.  As you review this site, please let us know if you have questions.
