Displaced by Katrina, visiting students find UI support, opportunities
Many UI units, college, departments, and programs have joined in the effort to ensure that the education of students from the Gulf Coast would not be interrupted by the storm. As a result, 24 displaced students (13 undergraduate and 11 graduate or professional) are enrolled at the UI--attending classes, studying, getting to know their peers, and processing the events that brought them to The University of Iowa.

Funding Support Services for Graduate Students
|
The Division of Sponsored Programs offers practical help and information to graduate and professional students who are seeking external funding for research, scholarships, fellowships, travel, and more.
Visit the DSP website (http://research.uiowa.edu/dsp) for access to databases for funding opportunities from government agencies and private sources, tips on grant writing, and many other helpful links.
For an individual session and hands-on training, graduate students can make an appointment with Diane Crosby, 335-3597, dsp-grant1@uiowa. Appointment includes:
- Detailed discussion of student's work and funding goals
- Development of key search terms
- Instruction on effective, efficient use of databases
- Tips on how to incorporate funding searches into professional development
- Practical time management advice
After the appointment, students receive an email follow-up with a record of the session, the search tools used, key words, and advice to get grant searches underway. The DSP office is located at 100 Gilmore Hall.
DSP also provides continued support for the duration of the grant writing process, including:
Guidance in developing and critiquing applications
Assistance with preparing project budgets
Free access to photocopier, fax, and phone for application processing
