The Graduate College, under Provost Hogan’s direction, has assembled graduate recruitment and retention efforts under a new Office of Graduate Ethnic Inclusion.
Professor Phil Kutzko (Department of Mathematics) will serve as the director, overseeing programs that were previously making separate efforts. Those programs include Alliance for Graduate Education in the Professoriate (AGEP), Iowa Biosciences Advantage (IBA), and Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP).
The goal of the Office of Graduate Ethnic Inclusion is to build a sustainable practice of inclusion to attract and keep top underrepresented graduate scholars campus wide. "We plan to do this by doing things a little differently, using approaches that we have developed [in the Department of Mathematics] to build community and involve faculty" in recruiting and mentoring efforts.
Success in ethnic inclusion is familiar to Dr. Kutzko and his colleagues in the UI Department of Mathematics. In 2004, the department won the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) -- a program supported and administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The Graduate College welcomes Dr. Kutzko, UI AGEP staff and IBA staff!
After adjourning for the summer, the Graduate Council held its first meeting of the semester on August 25, 2005. Dean Keller briefed the group on his goals for graduate education for this academic year.
Full meeting minutes will be posted pending their approval at the next Graduate Council meeting, to be held September 8, 2005.
The Graduate Student Senate (GSS) is the graduate student government organization at The University of Iowa. Learn more about the benefits of joining GSS by reading the GSS President's Welcome Letter or visiting the GSS web site.
Among many other functions, the GSS partners with the Graduate College to administer travel funds for graduate scholars presenting their work at conferences and other professional meetings. Both domestic and international travel funds are available. September 22, 2005 is the next deadline for application for travel funds. Check the GSS site for further information.

2005 D.C. Spriestersbach
Dissertation Prize Winners
|
The D.C. Spriestersbach Dissertation Prize is a competitive annual award offered by the Graduate College. The award recognizes graduate scholars whose dissertations reflect the highest standards of academic work in their field. Winning dissertations represent original work making an unusually significant contribution to the discipline. Both methodological and substantive quality are judged.
Winners will receive $2500 each, awarded at a reception in conjunction with the Jakobsen Forum in March 2006. The winners also become the UI nominees to the national competition for the Council of Graduate Schools/University Microfilms International Distinguished Dissertation Award. This year's CGS/UMI winners and finalists will be announced in December 2005 at the annual CGS meeting.
The Graduate Deans' Distinguished Dissertation Award winners receive $500 and will also be recognized at the reception next spring.
