The Graduate College is pleased to announce the appointment of Minnetta Gardinier, Ph.D., as the Associate Dean for Recruitment and Professional Development. Minnetta Gardinier is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology in the Carver College of Medicine and currently serves as Director of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Her appointment will begin February 1, 2006.

Graduate faculty members Kathleen Diffley and Richard Shields have been named winners of the 2005 Mentor Award.Each year, the Graduate College gives two $2500 awards to recognize and reward faculty who demonstrate exemplary mentoring efforts. L.B. Sims Outstanding Master's Thesis Award
Joseph Patrick Tesene, a graduate student in Chemistry, has won the new L.B. Sims Outstanding Master's Thesis Award for his thesis Magnetically-Treated Electrolytic Manganese Dioxide in Alkaline Electrolyte.This award recognizes outstanding work in a UI master's thesis. The winner receives $500 and the UI's nomination to the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) Distinguished Thesis Award competition.
