Dominguez, Segre Win Graduate College
Outstanding Mentor AwardsThe University of Iowa Graduate College will present Outstanding Mentor Awards to two professors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Virginia Dominguez, professor of anthropology, and Alberto Segre, professor of computer science, won the awards, which are given annually to two faculty members who have demonstrated exemplary mentoring efforts in graduate education. The awards carry a $2,500 prize.
The Graduate College regards the art of mentoring as a crucial ingredient of education. The Outstanding Mentor Award celebrates mentors' demonstrated commitment to helping graduate students succeed both at the university and in their future careers. The Graduate College recognizes the significant efforts of its faculty mentors, who assist with all aspects of UI graduate scholars’ research, dissertation, professional development, and job placement. Dominguez and Segre were selected from an impressive group of graduate faculty mentors who were nominated for the award by graduate students and other faculty members.
Two other nominated faculty from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences – David Wiemer, professor of chemistry, and Peverill Squire, professor of political science -- received Special Recognition for Mentoring.
This year's awards recognize faculty members in social sciences and in mathematical and physical sciences and engineering. In alternate years the awards are presented to faculty in humanities and fine arts and in biological and life sciences.
A reception to honor the award winners and nominees will be held Tuesday, Nov. 28.
