Presidential Graduate FellowshipThe Graduate College is pleased to invite nominations for Presidential Graduate Fellowships, a program that brings twenty to twenty-five of the most promising doctoral students to The University of Iowa.
Each department may nominate a maximum of 6 students during the Spring 2008 admissions/recruiting cycle. The deadline for nominations is March 7, 2008.

The Graduate College is pleased to announce the 2008 Graduate College Summer Fellowship. All doctoral graduate students are invited to review the criteria for the award. The Graduate College will award up to 150 fellowships for the summer 2008.
Applications are due Friday, March 7, 2008.

Students who have previously received a Graduate College Summer Fellowship are not eligible to apply. Also, students who have received a Presidential Graduate Fellowship, Dean’s Graduate Fellowship or a Ballard Seashore Dissertation Year Fellowship are also not eligible for this award.Students may apply for the Graduate College Summer Fellowship and be nominated by the Department for consideration for a Ballard Seashore Dissertation Year Fellowship but can only accept one of the awards.
If you work with a graduate student who has been invited to present research at a conference outside the U.S., or if you are a graduate student who has been invited, International Programs Graduate Travel Award can provide up to $500 to cover transportation costs. All fields of study are eligible.
Applications are limited to conferences located outside the United States. The next deadline is April 16, 2008.

Cramer Wins Geography Ph.D. Dissertation AwardBarton Cramer, doctoral candidate in Geography, has won the 2008 Transportation Geography Specialty Group (TGSG) Ph.D. Dissertation Award.
The award comes with an honorarium of $250 and recognition at the TGSG Business Meeting in April, to be held in San Francisco Saturday, April 19, 2008.
Cramer's dissertation advisor is Claire E. Pavlik.
UI Graduate Student Senate and Graduate College to host Jakobsen Conference in MarchAs part of Graduate Student Recognition Week, the Graduate Student Senate and the Graduate College will sponsor the 10th Annual James F. Jakobsen Conference March 28-29, 2008. The event offers graduate students professional development opportunities to present their research in a conference-like atmosphere without having to leave home.
Up to $6,000 will be awarded to top presentations of the five major divisions of the Graduate College. Last year's Forum presented cash awards ranging from one hundred to three hundred dollars to over 40 graduate students.

External Funding Assistance for Graduate StudentsFor most graduate students, seeking and applying for external funding is an important part of professional development. The Graduate College and the Division of Sponsored Programs (DSP) provide free Graduate Services to help students with funding search strategies, proposal development and review, workshops, and more.

Graduate students applying for external funding are required to complete a UIRIS routing form for every external funding application they submit.

Dissertation Support Group meets weeklyThe University Counseling Service (UCS) is offering a Dissertation Support Group which meets weekly at the UCS. This is an ongoing weekly self-help and support group for those involved in all stages of the dissertation process. Degree of structure of the program will depend upon the needs and requests of the group participants. The program will address some of the most frequently encountered challenges doctoral students experience while writing the dissertation. It will also suggest strategies to minimize these potential challenges. For more information about the Group and to obtain meeting day and time, please call the UCS at 335-7294.
