Department of Pharmacology, Dr. Mohapatra Lab

Postdoctoral Position in Ion Channel Biology / Neuro-/ Cardiovascular Physiology

Employer: University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Department of Pharmacology

Location: Iowa City, IA 52242

Start Date: Negotiable

A postdoctoral position is available in the Department of Pharmacology, University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Iowa City. The laboratory is interested in studying Ion Channel Modulations and cellular plasticity in neuronal/cardiovascular membrane excitability. In particular, projects are aimed at studying the dynamic regulation of expression, trafficking, localization and functions of voltage-gated potassium channels by diverse cellular signal transduction pathways. Check Mohapatra & Trimmer, J Neurosci 2006; Park et al., Science 2006; and Mohapatra et al., J Neurosci 2008 to get a broad idea on the future projects. These projects will utilize animal models as well as primary cell cultures (neuronal and cardiac myocytes), biochemical, proteomic, cell & molecular biological, and electrophysiological techniques to answer critical questions.

Ph.D. with thorough training/experience in Ion Channel Biology (preferably electrophysiology) as well as basic knowledge in cell physiology are a must. Experience in confocal imaging and analyses will be an added advantage. APPLICANTS WITHOUT THE ABOVE-MENTIONED EXPERTISE/TRAINING WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION.

We have excellent tissue culture, biochemical, molecular/cell biological, imaging, and electrophysiological facilities. The University of Iowa, College of Medicine has excellent central core research facilities (Genomic, Proteomic, Microscopy & Imaging, and Gene-targeting cores) at our disposal for rapid advancement of research work.

Iowa City is consistently voted as one of the most livable cities and the University of Iowa ranks among the top 10 Universities in the US to do postdoctoral research. Also, Iowa City has the third highest per capita Ph.Ds in the US. The city offers an array of cultural and athletic events including theater, symphony performances, international art exhibits and big 10 athletic events.
