Computing Resources
The University of Iowa campus offers a variety of information technology services to students. Services include computing networking resources, telephone services, and other technologies that support the learning, research, and outreach missions of the University. Information Technology Services (ITS) provides many of these services.
HawkID
Each student is assigned a
HawkID, an
electronic identity which is used to allow access to the public computer
labs, control printing in the labs, and authorize students to use the
free campus dial-up service. It is also used to
access
ISIS and Webmail.
Email
Registered students may sign up for a no-charge e-mail account through
ISIS. E-mail can be accessed from a personal computer,
ITCs, e-mail
kiosks in public locations, or anywhere with internet
access through a web interface called
Webmail.
Remote Access (Dial-up)
Remote Access allows students living in family housing and off campus to
access University resources and the Internet through a dial-up service.
This service is provided at no charge to the students and uses the
Hawk
ID username and password. The service supports 56 Kb & V.90 connections
and full Internet protocols for web browsing.
Buying
a Computer
Educational pricing is available on Apple, Dell,
and Gateway computers
through the
ITS
Computer Demo Center.
Instructional Technology Centers (ITCs)
ITS and various departments jointly support 26
ITCs across campus.
These centers provide more than 1,200 computers with printers, software,
and access to the Internet at no charge. A
HawkID is
required to log on to the network. Several
ITCs offer assistive
devices such as voice synthesis and voice recognition for persons with
disabilities.
