Graduate-Friendly Nightlife

Iowa City and Coralville offer many establishments that are graduate student friendly.  Iowa City downtown, while it attracts a large number of undergrads, also offers many 21 and over options that offer great entertainment.  Coralville is also a great place to get away from campus and enjoy more mellow, family and graduate friendly places.  Below is a short list of some favorites:

The Sanctuary - 405 S.Gilbert Street
Great, mellow atmosphere. Jazz combos and local artists play there often, including musicians from the UI School of Music. Good pizza. 1/2-price wine on Tuesdays.

The Foxhead - 402 E. Market Street
Neighborhood bar, lots of history, and a hangout for UI grad students as well as neighborhood regulars. They have pool tables as well.

George's - 312 E. Market Street
A neighborhood bar with a lot of history and a hangout for grad students and locals.

Dublin Underground - 5 S. Dubuque Street
Small Irish Pub. They have pool tables as well as board games for entertainment.

Wig and Pen - Just past Iowa City on the Coralville Strip
Great Pizza and mellow atmosphere.  A place for graduate students and locals.

Atlas - 127 Iowa Avenue
Pool tables and juke box. Great food. 21 and over.

126 - 126 E. Washington Street
Fantastic food, offers a bar on both levels.  1/2-price wine on Mondays. 

Takanami - 219 Iowa Avenue
You can get sushi at the sushi bar or regular bar. Very nice, modern atmosphere. Check out their happy hour specials on sushi and drinks. Smoke Free.

Martini’s - 127 E. College St. (on Ped Mall)
Nice atmosphere, good drinks, great patio for summer. 21 and over.

The Vine - Just past Iowa City on the Coralville Strip
Sit in the bar where there are about 100 TVs playing various sports.

Mickey’s - 11 S. Dubuque Street
Relaxed, not too loud, good food and drink.
