Iowa City Weather
The cold weather, common during Iowa winters, comes as a shock to visitors from warmer climates. Low temperatures are made even more uncomfortable when the wind is blowing. Here are some suggestions on how to cope with Iowa weather:

- Wear several layers of lighter clothing rather than one or two very heavy layers.
- Choose warm fabrics such as absorbent natural fibers (cotton, wool).
- Leave as few areas of the body exposed as possible. Keep your head and ears covered with a hat or hood; ears are easily susceptible to frostbite. Wear a scarf covering your mouth and nose.
Thunderstorms during the Iowa summers can be spectacular but also
dangerous. If you hear the tornado warning sirens, turn on your radio
for information. The following are safety guidelines to follow in this
situation:
- Go to an interior room in the lowest level of the building you are in.
- If you are in a mobile home, leave and find shelter. If you are in a car, pull over and lie face down in a ditch.
