Derivation of New Therapeutics from Bioactive Polyanions

Research Description To design, prepare and evaluate novel saccharide-based therapeutic agents having greater affinity and selectivity for target proteins than parent polyanionic saccharides. 
Undergraduate Role The project in my laboratory for this program will be focused within one of the following areas depending on the students' research interest:  1)  the synthesis of novel low charge oligosaccharides that possess high binding affinity and specificity for individual heparin-binding proteins or 2) the evaluation of novel chemically modified anionic oligosaccharides as; a) inhibitors of blood coagulation factors, b) inhibitors of proteins involved in the interaction of microorganisms with human cells and/or c) inhibitors of cationic peptides and proteins of the human innate immune system.
Minimum Qualifications Have completed at least one semester of coursework in organic chemistry and one or more semesters of coursework in the area of biochemistry, enzymology, microbiology, biology, physiology, pharmacology or similar life science field.

Tissue Engineering/Gene Delivery

Research Description Design a project on scaffolds for tissue engineering. Mentor student on report preparation. Mentor student on presentation.
Undergraduate Role Take active role in project, maintain enthusiasm and read background literature on research (provided by mentor).
Minimum Qualifications Experience with Biology preferable. Minimum GPA 3.0 - Above 3.7 preferable.

 Investigation of the Psychopharmacology of Salvinor in A

Principal Investigator Thomas E. Prisinzano, Assistant Professor

Research Description To further explore the SAR and psychopharmacology of the hallucinogenic sage Salvia divinorum.
Undergraduate Role Undergraduate will focus on isolation of compound from plant and synthesizing analogues for testing. Additionally the undergraduate will learn the techniques used in organic synthesis.
Minimum Qualifications General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry a plus, and a sense of humor.
