Cheryl Jacobsen

While continuing to expand her impressive portfolio of calligraphy projects for private clients, Cheryl Jacobsen is helping to create a program with various lettering classes at different levels.

Jacobsen, an adjunct assistant professor in The UI’s Saturday and Evening Program, teaches students how to write with a broad edged or pointed pen and develop the skills associated with that knowledge—an understanding of letterforms and a better grasp of spatial perception and design.

“My work at the Center has allowed me to expand my view and my teaching to make connections for myself and others between lettering and other disciplines such as typography, printing, paleography, bookbinding, fine art, medieval history and graphics,” Jacobsen said. “Hands-on collaborations with other book artists from the Center are especially rewarding.”
