Faculty Mentor Requirements
All UI McNair Faculty Mentors are required to:
- Attend the Welcome and Orientation events for Mentors and
Students, as well as the Farewell Luncheon.
- Design an appropriate research project for the student and/or
incorporate the student into ongoing research.
- Communicate a commitment to provide a well-rounded and
fulfilling experience for your student.
- Meet with the student on a weekly basis to monitor progress
throughout completion of the project.
- Mentor the student in writing a first draft and final abstract
that summarizes the research.
- Participate in UI McNair Scholars Program scholarly activities
to aid in preparing the student for success as a future graduate
student. These activities may include professional development
workshops, journal clubs, seminars, or Q & discovery sessions
(informal discussions to learn about aspects of graduate education
and academia).
- Assist the student in preparing an abstract and poster for
presentation at the UI Summer Undergraduate Research Conference and
the CIC/SROP conference (Michigan State University, Summer 2008).
- Assist the student in preparing for an informal roundtable
discussion of the research at the CIC/SROP Conference.
- Complete the UI McNair Faculty Mentor final report.
