I invite you to explore the opportunities available to you in The University of Iowa McNair Scholars Program. As a McNair Scholar, you will benefit from a mentored academic environment designed to prepare you for achieving your goal of graduate training and research. You will actively participate in workshops that will aid you in strengthening your academic preparations for transitioning to graduate school. You will meet regularly for informal conversations and discussions with faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students to learn about the graduate experience. You will attend journal clubs and seminars to hear about cutting edge research ongoing in laboratories at Iowa and from around the world. Finally, you will identify a research area of your choice, join a research team, and add your own contributions to this discovery process. Each Scholar will undertake an 8-week research intensive experience in a UI research laboratory. Collectively, these activities will solidify a foundation upon which you can build your future.
You may be appointed to the University of Iowa McNair Scholars Program via two competitive mechanisms:
- The Iowa Scholars Program is designed for UI
undergraduates completing their junior year of study on campus. You
will submit a McNair application during the Fall semester, and if
awarded, you will be appointed to start in the Spring semester. Your
appointment will span the Spring, Summer, and Fall (senior year)
academic periods.
- The Visiting Scholars Summer Research Program is designed for undergraduates training at other accredited U.S. colleges and universities that may lack research intensive opportunities. You will submit a McNair application during your junior year of study by Mar 15, and if awarded, you will be appointed starting Summer 2008. Your participation will span the 8-week research period, as well as through continuing communications throughout your senior year at your home institution.
The Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and strives to encourage students from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue doctoral studies. Students with strong academic potential will be provided with extensive support and mentorship as McNair Scholars at The University of Iowa. We will work closely with you as you complete your undergraduate requirements and build your portfolios for graduate study. The goal of the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program is “to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society.”
If a doctoral degree is among your goals, explore the University of Iowa McNair Scholars Program as one step on your path to achieving that goal.
