Fellowships & Funding from the Graduate College

The following funding opportunities available through the Graduate College:

Please note the eligibility and application information. Many of these opportunities are available only through departmental nomination. Contact your department advisor for more information.

    Presidential Graduate Fellowships
Eligibility: 30 awards for distinguished Ph.D. applicants. Competitive across disciplines.
Award: First year (no service required): $23,500 total ($18,000 AY fellowship + $5,500 summer session stipend) + tuition + standard UI fees + health insurance allowance
Second year: RA/TA stipend + $5,500 summer stipend + tuition + standard UI fees + health insurance allowance
Third year: RA/TA stipend + $5,500 summer stipend + tuition + standard UI fees + health insurance allowance
Fourth year (no service required): $23,500 total ($18,000 AY fellowship + $5,500 summer session stipend)
Dissertation year (no service required): $25,000 total ($19,500 AY fellowship + $5,500 summer stipend) + tuition + standard UI fees + health insurance allowance
Note: This award may be supplemented by departments or programs.

Must be nominated by department or program.
Deadline: Rolling consideration of nominees beginning in January; nominations will be accepted until Friday, March 7.

   Dean's Graduate Fellowship
Eligibility: Up to 30 awards to outstanding nominees who are from groups underrepresented in their academic field of study in the Graduate College. U.S. citizenship is required.
Award: Doctoral Fellows:
First year (no service required): $17,500 + $4,000 summer stipend + tuition + standard UI fees + health insurance allowance
Second year: 50% RA/TA stipend + $4,000 summer stipend + tuition + standard UI fees + health insurance allowance
Third year: 50% RA/TA stipend + $4,000 summer stipend + tuition + standard UI fees + health insurance allowance
Dissertation year (no service required): $17,500 + $4,000 summer stipend + tuition + standard UI fees + health insurance allowance
Master's Fellows:
First year*: 25% RA/TA from dept./prog. + GC fellowship (approx. $8,250; no service required) for a TOTAL of approx. $16,500.
Second year: 25% RA/TA from dept./prog. + GC fellowship (approx. $8,250; no service required) for a TOTAL of approx. $16,500.
Summer stipend may be requested if the student is registered.
* Department/program may request that the Graduate College provide a full fellowship stipend for year one ($16,500), and the department/program will agree to provide a full 50% RA/TA for year two.

Eligibility: Two awards allocated to talented Doctor of Musical Arts applicants
Award: First year (no service required): $15,000 + $2,000 summer stipend + tuition + fees + health insurance allowance
Second year: $7,255 + 25% or greater RA stipend + $2,000 summer stipend + tuition + fees + health insurance allowance
Third year: $7,255 + 25% or greater RA stipend + tuition + fees + health insurance allowance

    Ballard and Seashore Dissertation Year Fellowships
Eligibility: 30 awards each year to doctoral students in the humanities and social sciences who will complete their dissertation by the end of the fellowship year
Award: Total award of $22,000: $1,800 per month for academic year (10 months) + 2 credit hours tuition each fellowship semester + standard graduate student fees + health insurance allowance; and $4,000 stipend for the summer ($2,000 per month –July/August) + 2 credit hours tuition + standard graduate student fees + health insurance allowance

    Social Science Dissertation Year Fellowship

    Graduate College Summer Fellowship
Eligibility: Up to 150 awards for doctoral candidates who will have completed their comprehensive exams by the end of the Spring term. Students who have previously received Graduate College Summer Fellowships, Ballard or Seashore Fellowships, or other post-comprehensive summer fellowships funded by the Graduate College are ineligible for the award, as are students who have other summer fellowship or graduate assistantship support. Students must register for a maximum of 2 credit hours. These may be dissertation hours, or other courses.
Award: $3,000 + 2 credit hours tuition + standard graduate student fees

    T. Anne Cleary International Dissertation Research Fellowships
Eligibility: Awards for research outside of the United States for doctoral students who have completed their comprehensive exams by the end of the summer of 2008.
Award: Awards generally range from $1,500 to $5,000. Intended as a supplement for other research funds.

    Graduate Incentive Fellowship (GIF)
Eligibility: UI graduate students applying for any Nationally Competitive Fellowship.
Award: The award winning student will receive funds equal to 5% of one year of the national fellowship stipend. The GIF is a one-year, non-renewable fellowship.
How to Apply:
Notify the Graduate College upon receiving a Nationally Competitive Fellowship.

    Graduate Student Senate Travel Awards
Eligibility: Graduate students presenting papers or posters at professional conferences. Competitive across disciplines.
Award: Reimbursements for travel administered by Graduate Student Senate and the Graduate College. Awards vary from $200 to $400, based on location of conference.

    Pelzer Fellowships
Eligibility: Limited to graduate students in Art, Music, and History
Award: Art: 4 awards of $7,500 each
Music: 2 awards of $7,500 each
History: 1 award of $15,000

    2008 Kenneth T. Key Scholarship for Taiwanese-Born Graduate Students
Eligibility: The Kenneth T. Key Scholarship will be awarded this year for up to three University of Iowa graduate students born in Taiwan. Students whose tuition is fully paid by another source do not qualify for this award. Awards will be competitive and based on a student's academic record.
Award: Award recipients will receive a $2,000 tuition scholarship for the 2008-09 academic year, with $1,000 paid each semester. The Kenneth T. Key Scholarship is a one year award, and is not renewable.

Applicants must submit the following materials:

  • Cover page (download fillable PDF)
  • Statement concerning education goals and plans (no more than 300 words)
  • One letter of recommendation from a University of Iowa professor in the student's department or program. This letter should be in a sealed envelope with the professor's signature across the seal.
  • Proof of birth in Taiwan (such as a photocopy of passport or visa)

    Joseph E. and Ursil I. Callen Prize
Eligibility: Outstanding graduating seniors in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students must plan to attend graduate school at the University of Iowa or at any other university beginning the summer or fall of 2008. Candidates must be United States citizens who were born in the United States.
Award: The $5000 prize is funded by University of Iowa alumni Joseph E. and Ursil I. Callen.

More Information   Nomination Procedure
    Sanxay Prize
Eligibility: UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences senior, born in Iowa or a current permanent resident of Iowa, who shows the highest promise of achievement in graduate work. Students must plan to enter a doctoral program in 2008.
Award: A stipend of $1,000 which may be used at UI or any other university in the U.S. or abroad.

    Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP)
Eligibility: Undergraduate students from UI and other undergraduate colleges and universities with a demonstrated interest in pursuing Ph.D. degrees and academic/research careers.
Award: Summer fellowships for undergraduates to participate in research under the supervision of graduate faculty members at Iowa.
