Commencement: May 11, 2018

Graduate students and faculty at commencement.

The Graduate College holds commencement ceremonies each year in May and December. To participate in the ceremony, you must register.

The spring commencement ceremonies will be held Friday, May 11, 2018. The ceremony for doctoral students (PhD, DNP, DMA, AUD) will be held at 9 a.m. at Hancher Auditorium. The ceremony for master's students will be held at 7 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

How Do I Register to Participate?

Master’s candidates

Master’s candidates must register online to participate in the Graduate College commencement ceremony.

What do I wear?

Master’s candidates are required to wear the University of Iowa Master’s custom rental apparel consisting of a custom Master’s gown, mortar board, tassel, and Master’s hood. Master’s candidates will no longer be wearing the cords as in past ceremonies. Master’s hoods will be worn instead.

Apparel rental is $59.25 plus tax and must be made online from Herff Jones. If students need assistance on how to order, degree candidates may contact Herff Jones (gradmidwest@gmail.com, 952-447-4449). Students ordering after April 6, 2018 will be charged a late fee.

Arrangements for apparel should be made online no later than Friday, April 6, 2018.

Rentals will be available for pickup on May 10 and May 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the west entrance of Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Doctoral candidates

Doctoral candidates must register online to participate in the Graduate College commencement ceremony.

Doctoral candidates should check with their advisers to be sure they are available to attend the ceremony to participate in the hooding exercise. If your adviser/dissertation chair is not available, you may ask someone else on your committee to be your faculty hooder.

What Do I Wear?

Doctoral candidates must wear the University of Iowa custom doctoral apparel, available online from Herff Jones. If students need assistance on how to order, degree candidates may contact Herff Jones (gradmidwest@gmail.com, 952-447-4449).

Apparel consists of tam w/tassel, doctoral gown, and doctoral hood and will be shipped to the doctoral candidate's home. The total cost is $99.90 plus tax. Students ordering after April 6, 2018 will be charged a late fee.

Faculty

Faculty must register online to participate in the Graduate College commencement ceremony.

Faculty must order apparel online from Herff Jones. If you have questions, please contact Herff Jones (gradmidwest@gmail.com, 952-447-4449).

Faculty who are UI alumni will wear the custom UI regalia. Faculty who received their degree from somewhere other than the UI will be wearing black gowns with black velvet. The doctoral hood will designate the school/degree received.

The rental fee is $80.95 and must be paid for using a personal credit card or a departmental procurement card to complete the order.

Faculty ordering after April 6, 2018 will be charged a late fee.

Orders will be available for pickup Thursday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

At the Ceremony

Men are expected to wear ties, although jackets are not required. Flowers are not worn on gowns, nor are they carried in hand. Caps or gowns decorated with inappropriate messages will not be permitted. We also caution graduates regarding their choice of footwear, as the stairs and floor covering at the arena may be difficult to navigate. Wearing high-heeled footwear is not advised. Bags or purses may not be carried; plan to leave them with friends or relatives.

Caps are to be worn with the tams or mortar boards horizontal and the tassel on the left. They should be worn during the Processional, while degrees are being conferred, and during the Recessional. They may be removed at other times.
