MECCP: Steps to Complete the Graduate Certificate

The Graduate Certificate in Multicultural Education and Culturally Competent Practice (MECCP) is a combination of an introductory course, electives specific to the individual’s program of interest and a capstone course leading to a graduate certificate requiring 15 semester hours of coursework. It is critical to register for the program so we can best assure there will be sufficient sections and seating in the classes during the semester in which you plan to enroll.

Registration Steps:

  1. Go to the Office of Graduate Teaching Excellence (OGTE) web site.
  2. Fill out the Registration Form located on the web page.
  3. Complete the Background Information and Plan of Study sections.
  4. PRINT hardcopy for your advisor’s signature.
  5. Submit completed form electronically.
  6. Drop off or mail the signed form to:

Completing the Program:

Coursework:

  1. Graduate students begin the program by taking an introductory course on multicultural education and culturally competent practice
    07X:140 Introduction to Multicultural Education and Cultural Competence 3 s.h.
  2. Students then choose a minimum of 9 semester hours of electives from the approved courses that will enhance their programs of study and professional practice.
  3. The final course in the Certificate program will be a capstone course. This course will be taken after the electives have been completed and will allow students an opportunity to demonstrate in written, oral, and portfolio form, their multicultural skills within their professional practice. This course will be focused on student’s individual projects to allow the application of the students’ multicultural competency within his/her area of professional practice.

Completion Steps:

  1. Go to the Office of Graduate Teaching Excellence (OGTE) web site.
  2. Fill out the Certificate of Completion for the Graduate Certificate in Multicultural Education and Culturally Competent Practice Form located on the MECCP web page.
  3. Complete the course name and number and semester completed sections.
  4. PRINT hardcopy for your advisor’s signature.
  5. Drop off or mail the signed form to:

Certificate of Completion:

Upon approval by the Advisory Committee of the Office of Graduate Teaching Excellence, a recommendation will be made to the Graduate College to award the Certificate to the student. A notation will be added to the student’s transcript at the time of certificate completion, providing an official record of the student’s accomplishments when the student seeks employment. The student will also receive a Certificate from the Graduate College.
