Recommended Steps when Applying for Assistantships:
- Contact your academic department to learn about available GA opportunities. You may also check the Graduate College's Open Assistantships Page.
- Apply for a Graduate Assistantship. Complete and submit any applications.
- Wait to hear from your academic department. Academic departments are responsible for recommending and assigning GAs, and you may receive word of an assignment from your department.
- Please contact your academic department regarding the status of your application.

2020-2021 Stipend Amounts
The stipend levels for year 2020-2021 per the contract negotiated between the University of Iowa and the graduate employee union, United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America, Local 896 (COGS) are:
Academic year salary: 2020-2021 (One-half time $20,041) (One-quarter time $10,020.50)
Fiscal year salary: (One-half time $24,486) (One-quarter time $12,243)
FY20 Fringe rate: 16.2%
FY21 Fringe Rate: 22.0%.
Students holding a 25% or greater teaching or research assistantship appointment will be assured a tuition scholarship.
2020-2021 Tuition Scholarship Amounts
In FY21 a minimum tuition scholarship of $5,306/academic year semester ($10,612 per year) will be paid. The tuition scholarships will be applicable only for the academic year and does not include scholarships for summer semester enrollment. These rates for the tuition scholarship are based on a 9 s.h. or greater registration and will be pro-rated as related to each student’s registration. The tuition scholarship is not affected by the level of appointment above 25% time. 50% of the mandatory fees will also be covered by the contract.
The tuition amount for College of Education students is $6,211.50 for the academic semester and $12,423 per year.
