Johnathan is an academic advisor in the Washington office of the Defense Language Institute (DLI) Foreign Language Center, holding the position of associate professor. He joined DLI in Monterey, California, where he most recently served as team leader for the German Program. In Monterey, he was active in faculty organizations, serving on the DLI-wide Academic Senate and as president of the European & Latin American School Faculty Advisory Counsel. In 2013, he received the DLI Civilian Instructor of the Year award from the Kiwanis Club of Monterey. In addition to being an experienced DLI instructor, Johnathan has taught at Monterey Peninsula College, the University of Iowa, and Technische Universität’ Dortmund (Germany). Johnathan has a Ph.D. and M.A. in German from the University of Iowa, an A.B. in German from Georgetown University, and a graduate certificate in public administration from the University of North Dakota. He has presented at national and international linguistics and foreign language education conferences. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, traveling, and spending time with his niece, Larissa.
