At DLI-Washington, his responsibilities include academic policy development, student advising, and academic oversight of training conducted under the Contract Foreign Language Training Program, which provides foreign language training in more than 60 languages to service members from across all branches of the Department of Defense. Johnathan joined DLI-Washington from DLI in Monterey, where he most recently served as team leader for the German program. In Monterey, he was active in faculty organizations, serving on the DLI-wide Academic Senate and as president of the European & Latin American School Faculty Advisory Council; in 2013, he received the DLI Civilian Instructor of the Year award from the Kiwanis Club of Monterey. In addition to being an experienced DLI instructor, Johnathan has taught at Monterey Peninsula College, the University of Iowa, and Technische Universität Dortmund (Germany). Johnathan has a Ph.D. and M.A. in Germanic linguistics from the University of Iowa; an A.B. in German from Georgetown University; and a Graduate Certificate in Public Administration from the University of North Dakota. He has presented at national and international linguistics and foreign language education conferences and currently serves on the External Advisory Board of the University of Iowa Graduate College.
