Understanding the tenuous lunar atmosphere and its connection to the surface and space environment

Research description

Analysis of spaceflight data from the ARTEMIS and LADEE missions, to study the lunar atmosphere. 

Undergraduate minimum qualifications

At least one year of physics, some experience in working with a programming language.

Undergraduate role

Students will participate in the analysis of spaceflight data from the Moon, from the two-probe ARTEMIS mission and the LADEE spacecraft, and will utilize a combination of plasma, atmospheric, and dust data to understand how the thin lunar atmosphere is generated, and how it evolves as a function of lunar phase and space weather conditions. Interested students with appropriate backgrounds may also participate in the design, fabrication, and testing of calibration equipment for spaceflight instrumentation.
