Research project title

Corruption, informal activity and societal stability in China and Russia

Research description

I am one of a team of University of Iowa researchers who commissioned nationally representative surveys in China and Russia in 2018 in which people were asked about their attitudes, their informal activities, including providing officials with bribes, gifts or favors, as well as the social networks they use for support. We seek to understand how people in these countries determine the best ways to interact with the political system and how that influences their support for or opposition to their government.

Undergraduate minimum qualifications

No minimum qualification. A course or experience in research skills for political or social sciences would be useful.

Undergraduate role

The participant will work to become familiar with these issues in China and Russia, with the data from our surveys, and, as necessary, with how to use the Stata data-analysis program. Then, I and the participant will identify a research question that the participant can answer by analyzing data from the project.
