Project title

Adolescent Substance Use and Participation in Organized Sports

Abstract

Adolescent substance use continues to be a problem that afflicts society. The relationship between organized sports and adolescent substance use is complex because of the many parameters that need analysis (Peretti-Watel, Guaglioardo, Verger, Pruvost, Mignon & Obadia, 2003). Some research posits that youth acquire a better sense of self and moral values through participating in sports (Gatz, Messner & Ball-Rokeach, 2002). Other research associates sports participation with higher levels of alcohol use (Caldwell & Darling, 1999). There are many inconsistencies among findings and more research is needed in order to support or discredit past discoveries regarding the association between organized sports and adolescent drug use. Adding research to the field will help research identify the risk and protective factors associated with sports participation. The purpose of the study will be to analyze the association between participation in organized sports and adolescent substance use frequency, substance-related problems, peer deviancy, level of care placement, and criminal activities.
